Silkies generally have a fluffy appearance; essentially, all their feathers are very much like down. Their unique appearance and their quiet temperament mean they are often kept as pets. The hens easily become broody, laying only a dozen or so eggs before attempting to hatch out their clutch. They are considered excellent mothers. Their broodiness makes them a poor breed for egg production although they will lay up to 100 light tinted eggs per year. |

The Rhode Island Reds are very good layers of brown eggs and can produce approximately 275 mid-brown eggs per year. The colour can vary from a brown-red to a deep chocolate red. The Rhode Island Red is a good choice for the small flock owner. Relatively hardy, they are probably the best egg layers of the dual purpose breeds. Reds handle marginal diets and poor housing conditions better than other breeds and still continue to produce eggs. A good dual purpose medium heavy fowl which is used more for egg production than meat production because of its dark coloured pin feathers and its good rate of lay. |

The light Sussex has a white body with a black tail and black wing tips, its neck is white striped with black and has a very striking appearance. The Sussex chicken is an alert, docile breed that can adapt to any surrounding, they are comfortable in both free range or confined spaces. The Sussex was bred to be a dual purpose bird and is one of the most productive breeds of poultry. They will lay about 270 large eggs per year that are cream to light brown in colour. |

Pekins are so popular and they have a quiet nature; they are friendly birds that can be tamed easily and because of this, make ideal pets especially for children. They do not need a lot of room. They also lay quite well, usually laying 275+ cream-coloured eggs a year, the eggs are smaller, around half the size of a ‘standard’ egg. Pekins regularly go broody. |
